After another year in F3, during which he also finished second overall in DTM, Liam made the step up to FIA Formula Two in 2021. Dovetailing his racing with a new role as Test and Reserve Driver for both Scuderia AlphaTauri and Oracle Red Bull Racing in 2022 he closed out his second F2 campaign with third place overall. A 2023 switch to Japan’s Super Formula resulted in another runner up finish but before the end of his campaign the Kiwi had already moved on.
When regular AlphaTauri racer Daniel Ricciardo was injured in a crash in practice for the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, Liam was drafted in to race at short notice. In tricky wet conditions and with just one practice session under his belt, the New Zealander qualified 19th and then raced to 13th to quickly mark himself out as one to watch. And after an 11th place finish at the following round in Monza, he scored his first Formula One points with a ninth-place finish on the gruelling streets of Singapore. After two more races, Liam stepped back for the fit again Ricciardo but after diligently returning to his Test and Reserve role, a second opportunity came his way midway through 2024.
At the 2024 US Grand Prix, Lawson once am gain replaced Ricciardo, this time for the remainder of the season. Impressive results over the following six races, including fifth place on the grid in Brazil and a pair of points finishes, in Austin and at Interlagos once again proved his talent and following the end of the 2024 season, the decision was taken to elevate Liam from Visa Cash App Racing Bulls. After a brief stint with Oracle Red Bull Racing, Liam is back with VCARB in 2025 to help with the push for points in one of the tightest fields Formula One has ever seen.
