After an unreal European triple header, we had a tricky time in Montreal, but we’ve never been more back, folks.
To prepare for the 71 laps of the Red Bull Ring, VCARB are taking you on a virtual tour of the must-dos and must-sees during your visit to the Austrian Grand Prix.
Strap in: this is VCARB’s Cultural Guide to Spielberg.

Spielberg is a city in the Styrian region of Austria. The city, home to just 5,000 locals, becomes the beating heart of Formula One once a year. Styria is commonly referred to as the ‘Green March’ for being one of the most forested areas of Austria. The wider Styrian region has a population of 1.2 million and was the home of Jochen Rindt, the 1970 F1 World Champion, Dietrich Mateschitz, founder of Red Bull and Helmut Marko, advisor to Oracle Red Bull Racing. A certain well-known bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-Californian-Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was also born in Styria.

Domestic fans are likely to arrive at Graz Airport (GRZ), just 85 km from the circuit. Meanwhile, international tourists will arrive at Vienna International Airport (VIE), 200 km from Spielberg. Knittelfeld is the nearest train station to the Red Bull Ring and the local rail network offers shuttle buses to and from the circuit during race weekends. That means all that’s left for you to do is enjoy the racing.

For a small city, it’s pretty well connected, so you’re never too far away from something worth seeing. Graz, the biggest city in the Styrian region, is a medieval town with Renaissance and Baroque architecture. We recommend visiting the River Mur, the Schlossberg clock tower and Altstadt von Graz, a small town of beautiful buildings and local cuisine.
For the history fans among us, Landeszeughaus is the place to be. It’s a speciality museum of the world’s largest preserved collection of armoury from the 15th to 18th century. Over 32,000 objects are on show! Anyone fancy a joust? ?
You’ll want some food while you’re in the area, right? Bull’s Lane and Schönberghof Spielberg offer views of the Red Bull Ring while you eat.

Restaurant Amon, Gostilna Ribic and Baščaršija, offer the finest selection of local cuisine, including Käferbohnensalat (pumpkin salad), Bauernkrapfen (sweet pastry) and Klachelsuppe (soup). And yes, Wiener Schnitzel is available, as well as being very funny to say…
Finally, ski-heads, we’ve not forgotten you. Dachstein and Schladming are two of the finest places for scenic mountain views and launching yourself down an icy cliff face. The choice is yours. Although a ride up and down the cable car sounds just as fun for those less adventurous...
Also, did we mention there’s an Arnold Schwarzenegger museum? Yeah, there’s an Arnold Schwarzenegger museum. Hasta la vista, baby.
The Austrian Grand Prix was first held in 1964 at the Zeltweg Air Base. Since 1970, it has taken place at the Österreichring, currently known as the Red Bull Ring since being owned by the Austrian drinks brand we all know and love.
The circuit was updated in 1995 by Hermann Tilke, the famous track designer, who contributed to the newly-named A-1 Ring to remove its fast, dangerous corners and replace them with safer alternatives. Formula One returned to Austria in 1997 and was revisited every year until 2003. Austria wasn’t on the calendar for another decade until the grid returned in 2014. Max Verstappen has the most wins around the Red Bull Ring, taking glory in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023.
Join Isack, Liam and the VCARB team for the FORMULA 1 MSC CRUISES AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX 2025 from 27-29 June.
Auf Wiedersehen!
