The USA GP has had a somewhat peripatetic history. 44 races have gone by the name of the US Grand Prix, hosted at Watkins Glen twenty times, Indianapolis 8, Circuit of the Americas 11, Phoenix 3, Riverside and Sebring with one apiece.
Apart from the USA GPs, there were also events in Dallas, Detroit, Las Vegas and Long Beach, from the 70s to the mid-80s. Even the Indianapolis 500 was part of the picture, counting for the F1 World Championship in its early years, but usually no European drivers took part and it dropped off the F1 calendar in 1961.
Tim Goss – Chief Technical Officer:
“After a successful run of races in the East, it is time to head West for the next triple header, starting with Austin, Texas. The circuit is relatively new and is a wonderful mix of fast flowing corners, long straights and a tight stadium style section, all of which have taken inspiration from some of the best established F1 circuits. There is elevation change and there are overtaking opportunities, making it a driver's favourite.
“Pirelli bring their mid-range compounds, the C2, C3 and C4. Typically, the tyre degradation has been relatively low in the past leading to a reasonably balanced 1-stop strategy, and we would expect that at this year's race, it will be somewhere between a 1-stop and 2-stop, with race tyre management and race pace having as much importance as outright qualifying pace.
“Over the last three races, we have managed to build a small points buffer to our immediate competitors. However, the fight for Championship points and the final Championship standing is intense, and we will have to get everything right to defend our points margin by the end of the season. We bring some car updates for Austin which should help to keep us in the fight and we will continue to put our minds on operational and tactical excellence to make the most of any opportunities that come to us. Points are possible, and as ever we will go after them.”
