The origins of the venue are closely tied to Soichiro Honda, who envisioned the circuit as a test facility for road and racing cars. That focus on engineering purpose still defines the challenge today.
The Suzuka Circuit is one of the few figure of eight layouts in Formula One and remains largely unchanged in character since its design by John Hugenholtz in 1962. It is a track that flows. Corners link together, and small errors carry through entire sequences.
Key characteristics include:
- High speed direction changes through the Esses
- Sustained lateral load that tests tyre durability
- Limited opportunities to recover from mistakes
- A balance requirement between high speed stability and agility
"We've already had a great start to the Japanese GP week. We've been in Tokyo this past week as we revealed our special livery, inspired by the Red Bull Spring Edition can and unveiled at the Red Bull Tokyo Drift event. It was really cool to experience such a unique event that celebrates Japanese car culture; it felt like we were in a movie. I had the chance to be the passenger whilst we were drifting, which was amazing and something that scared me more than I thought it would, going at those speeds at such tight corners it's something you'd think I'd be used to. It was also another showcase of how we champion creatives at VCARB, as we worked with a shodo calligraphy artist. The livery is one of the coolest we've done, I particularly like the chrome red and cannot wait to display it on track in a few days' time.
"Australia and China were both completely different races, and everything was new to me, so there are definitely some good learnings I'm bringing to Suzuka this week, as well as some things I know I need to work on. I'm very much looking forward to racing for the first time at this iconic track; I think it will be great driving around such a fast and flowing circuit. It's one of those where you have to be brave at some points, which is exciting as it gives you that feeling of pure racing which we all love."
