The Formula 1 season is one of the most demanding in world sport. We take a closer look at why the championship pauses every summer and why the break is essential for teams, drivers and the people behind the scenes.
Formula 1 is a global championship, with teams travelling across the world for much of the year. Between races, work continues almost around the clock as engineers analyse data, mechanics prepare the cars and factory staff design and manufacture new parts.
At VCARB, that work takes place across our two facilities in Faenza, Italy, and Milton Keynes, England. While you see us on track during race weekends, hundreds of people are working behind the scenes every day to design, build and prepare every component that goes into our cars.
With so much happening away from the circuit, Formula 1 builds in a summer break to allow everyone to recover before the second half of the season.

The summer break exists to protect the wellbeing of the people who make Formula 1 possible. Every Grand Prix is supported by months of planning, manufacturing, testing and preparation before the cars even leave the factory.
To make sure every team has the same opportunity to switch off, Formula 1 regulations include a mandatory factory shutdown. During this period, teams cannot continue developing or building their cars, creating a level playing field while allowing everyone to take a well-earned break.
For us at VCARB, that means both our Faenza and Milton Keynes factories fall quiet temporarily. The workshops, design offices and production areas pause, giving our people the chance to rest before the championship resumes.

Although there is no racing, preparation for the rest of the season never completely stops.
Before the shutdown begins, we carefully plan our workload so we are ready to hit the ground running when the factories reopen. New parts are manufactured, freight is prepared for upcoming races and development plans are organised in advance.
For Liam and Arvid, the break provides valuable time to recover physically and mentally. While continuing their training in preparation for the return to racing in Zandvoort straight after the summer break, this is also one of the few opportunities during the season to spend time with family and friends before a busy second half of the season.

Formula 1 is as much about people as it is about performance. Every race weekend depends on mechanics, engineers, strategists, logistics specialists and hundreds of factory staff working together under intense pressure.
At VCARB, our teams in Faenza and Milton Keynes work as one throughout the year. The summer break allows everyone to recharge before attention turns to the final part of the championship.
A well-rested team is better equipped to make clear decisions, solve problems quickly and continue delivering performance both at the factory and at the track.

Once the mandatory shutdown comes to an end, both of our factories return to full speed. Development programmes restart, new parts move into production and preparations begin for the next race.
For fans, the pause may feel long, but it plays an important role in keeping Formula 1 competitive while ensuring the people behind every team have the time to recover. Before long, we’ll be back on track and ready for the next challenge at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort from 21-23 August.
